Tsvangirai hires new strategists

MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai is re-strategising in the wake of serious internal squabbles that have rocked the party.

He has started to appoint experts to help him rebrand and chart a new direction ahead of the 2018 elections, it has emerged.

Sources said Tsvangirai, currently engaged in a bitter fight with the MDC-T Renewal Team faction led by “fired” secretary-general, Tendai Biti, has a new team of locally and foreign-based advisors.

The advisors were said to be working behind the scenes to help rebuild his image and revive his waning fortunes after President Robert Mugabe resoundingly beat him in last year’s elections.

The new team has 10 advisors who are experts in various areas, including politics, law, business and economics.

The Standard spoke to Maxwell Shumba, a scientist and longtime MDC-T member who confirmed that he was Tsvangirai’s new chief political strategist. He said under his new role, he was leading efforts to help Tsvangirai develop strategies and policies to bring real empowerment to the Zimbabwean people through political change.

Shumba said he and others were appointed after Tsvangirai noted that the party needed a new direction and a new thinking.

“My appointment is significant in that it demonstrates that the president [Tsvangirai] believes in renewal of both personnel and ideas. The president believes in a renewal process which is executed according to the provisions of our Constitution,” he said. “My appointment signifies a new direction and Zimbabweans hungry for change will soon experience those new changes. It is a change of process which will inspire all Zimbabweans, even those in Zanu PF.”

Shumba said new things which Tsvangirai had instituted since his appointment, included the setting up of MDC-T international offices in countries where there were many resident Zimbabweans.

He said the offices were being staffed by technical and professional people to augment the work done by the MDC-T External Assembly structures.

Shumba said Tsvangirai would soon be engaging “fellow” African leaders to appraise them of the new realities and the new direction the party would take.
He said a new “forward” has been developed by Tsvangirai and people will be informed of the new developments soon.

“With the new people coming on board, this time we are very confident that we will translate our win at elections into a win to rule,” said Shumba. “We are taking the lessons learnt seriously and believe Zimbabweans have a right to a better life and MDC under a rejuvenated president Tsvangirai will usher a new Zimbabwe whose future will be bright for all.”

What a load of nonsense from Tsvangirai. “Strategists”? Tsvangirai can employ thousands of so-called experts but one thing that is certain is that, under him, MDC-T will lose in 2018 and in 2023. Civilian parties like MDC-T cannot unseat ZanuPF military dictatorship in elections. 2008 was a fluke which the military will not allow to happen ever again.
What are the strategists going to do? Advise MDC-T to beat ZanuPF military with a feather this time? MDCs – wasting political space.

Why should this newspaper say “fired” Biti when it was Tsvangirai who was suspended by Biti’s national council in the first place. Tsvangirai is the one who was suspended by Biti. You should instead say “suspended” Tsvangirai. Biti at the time was the legitimate Secretary General of MDC-T when he suspended Tsvangirai.

      Nonsense. Its Mdc-T not Mdc-B

      • Musona May 18, 2014 at 1:47 pm #

@jairos – utter nonsense. MDC-T is not Tsvangirai’s private personal property. Tsvangirayi was suspended by the legitimate MDC-T sec gen. Tsvangirayi will lose the court case on this one. Not that I hold any brief for Biti but both Tsvangirayi and Biti are useless but we, the outsiders, want a fair fight.

what BITI was not legitimate members of the national executive so the meeting was null and void baba. read the articles well

          • Musona May 18, 2014 at 2:59 pm #

@celebrity – This newspaper sides with Tsvangirai so I will not go with what they report. When Biti and others had a meeting at Mandel Training Centre Biti was the legitimate sec gen. and that’s when they suspended Tsvangirai. In turn Tsvangirai retaliated by convening his own meeting to FIRE Biti. How can a suspended Tsvangirai fire the people who suspended him in the first place? Obert Gutu, one of Tsvangirai’s bootlickers, said it was better to resolve the issue on the political turf than go to courts where they have no chance of winning the argument. I don’t need to read what the biased reporter is saying – I was watching the events. The suspension of Tsvangirai came first.

we can not submit our comments and this shows incompetency on your part very very every bored

  4. Diibulaanyika May 18, 2014 at 1:56 pm #

Nowhere in the world that a mere sg can suspend the president ,his deputy the chair man and his deputy and if there is anyone believing that. then the person must be a cio

    • Musona May 18, 2014 at 3:04 pm #

@Diibulaanyika – Ndabaningi Sithole was fired from Zanu by other party officials like Tekere, Malianga, Nkala, in a kangaroo court convened in prison – Mugabe the then sec gen abstained, we were told. This shows it can be done.

  5. zvazviri May 18, 2014 at 2:16 pm #

Its a positive step in the right direction

  6. New Tekere May 18, 2014 at 3:01 pm #

Sipepa Nkomo of the Biti pro ZANU pf camp (read elsewhere and everywhere they contend that the elections were in everyway free and fair), did not chair a properly constituted meeting. For a meeting to be valid it must be properly constituted having regard to notices, chairmanship, agenda etc and it must have the requisite quorum. Sipepa Nkomo chairing the meeting is like a Regional Magistrate making a ruling at the supreme court. That these Biti, Sipepa guys are quislings being operated by someone outside the MDC T is undeniable. I am glad they do not hide their true colours as they continually read from the ZANU PF manuscript.

Yes, you can argue and argue, put all the facts but the bottom line is, MT is not supposed to stand for presidential elections come 2018. It’s according to their constitution. But by the look of things or reading through the lines , he still want to remain president.
If indeed he is a democrat like he says, he should respect the constitution and step down when time comes.
I hear a lot of you talking of him standing for presidency and wonder what you are tacking about.
Even if he stands, Morgan will never win against a 98 year old Bob.

  8. Diibulaanyika May 18, 2014 at 4:40 pm #

@Musona you are talking of one person who was suspended Ndabaningi but in this case its the the president .deputy, national chairman and deputy national organizing and deputy the list is endless surely you say you can not see some anomaly . came on .

  9. Siamababa May 18, 2014 at 4:52 pm #

Diibulaanyika never worry about these cio’s who are hallucinating after their project failed . Morgan is going nowhere while biti is gone for good even him knows that he is out. Morgan is a brand which magogos in Siachilaba in Binga and Deure in Gutu can easily identify with While I m not sure of the ailing Biti.

MDC is doomed if Biti becomes its President.Very few still trust him given the praises he was showering on Mugabe and Zanu pf

I won’t lose a minute of my time worrying about Tsvangirayi. But I will not develop clay feet and watch while this country goes again to another Bwidi, Biti. This country is for Zimbabweans, not Malawian vagrants. WTF!!!!!!!

  14. Mahwindow May 19, 2014 at 6:24 am #

Biti is a saleout he just want to find way of going back to ZANU PF and grab his job back as a finance minister he totally doesnt have the Zimbabwean people at heart he is a coward he is getting tired before the change is completed (chimbwasungata) he must just shut his mouth up and carry on to ZANU PF we dont care we got a lot more better comrades to feet his shoes and carry on with the push for change.
    AMEN.

Another package from an African child, full of sarcastic hatred of fellow Africans,Zimbabwe got help from the same bwidis to gain independence, but here we are forgetting our path to freedom,Zimbabwe’s road is narrow for you do not know where you came from,Racism at its best,so painful!!!!

It is amazing how some pple can stoop so low as to idolize Biti and Mangoma in their unconstitutional escapade. The truth of the matter is, Tsvangirai is at Harvest House and the renewal team is operating from some bush office in the dirty streets of Harare. Had they been barred to challenge for leadership at a congress – NO! They surely have rendered themselves into the political dustbin.

Morgan Tsvangirai always takes advice from the last person he spoke to. During the GNU, the last person he spoke to was Mugabe and that is why he was stupid enough to go into a Nikuved election. People like Bennett can frustratingly attest to this and that is why Tsvangirai has not spoken to him since the Wikileaks exposure. The truth must have hurt Morgan more than we may know.
