Magaya wows record crowd

The Prophetic Healing and Deliverance ministries’ all-night prayer held in Waterfalls on Friday could have pulled the largest crowd in the history of this country, estimated to have been over 300 000 people.

According to some church officials, they had laid out 300 000 chairs but by the time the event started every chair had been occupied.

Thousands more within the church arena and outside the precast wall and in the overflow area towards Highfield high-density suburb were either standing or sitting on the ground, on top of cars, while some were perched precariously in trees surrounding the Blue Shade which is opposite Zindoga shopping centre.

An overwhelmed Walter Magaya who is the founder of the church said the turnout, which was screened live on ZBC, was beyond his wildest imagination.

Speaking to the press backstage before his much anticipated preaching, the towering Magaya, who was wearing his usual simple ensemble of a shirt and black trousers, said he was amazed at the large crowd.

“I have never seen anything like this. Last year we only had a gathering of 5 000 people but just look at the crowd now,” he said battling to contain his emotions.

Known for being humble and down to earth, Magaya declined credit and said it was the work of the Almighty.

“I understand there are people from as far as Australia, United Kingdom, it’s all so humbling for me. People are hungry for the word,” he said shaking his head while his eyes swept the crowd.

People had started streaming to the venue in early in the morning of Friday, while others are said to have arrived the day before, even though the event was supposed to start at 8pm Friday. By around 6pm most seats had been taken except for a few reserved for the VIPs.

The human and traffic jam around the place took 120 police officers and 500 church marshals to contain but still there was much shoving and jostling to get inside.

The expectant crowd was kept on its feet by various artistes who gave sterling performances. First on stage was Christ Embassy’s Blessing Manyangadze aka Flame B. Wearing a trendy checkered jacket and white angle boots, the young gospel artiste had the crowd begging for more.

His spirited dances and catchy tunes became the crowd favourite and many danced along with him. Other musicians that wowed the crowds included Mathias Mhere, Sebastian Magacha among others.
But one artiste who had literally everyone on their feet was Zim dance hall music favourite Tocky Vibes.

The diminutive musician who was decked out in a black knee length overcoat had the crowd literally eating out of his hand, especially the young people who clearly adored him.

Magaya said his diverse selection of musicians was nothing out of the ordinary.

“Would you rather they play in beer halls and not in the house of God,” he quipped much to the amusement of the crowd.

However, after the captivating performance South African gospel crooner Benjamin Dube took over. With his deep silky tones he serenaded the congregants who swayed in rhythm to some of his popular tunes like, In Your Presence.

Dube who is not new to Zimbabwe since he features at most local church gatherings proved he was still one of the best gospel artists in Southern Africa.

However when Magaya drove into the arena in his modest navy blue Mazda Demio, the crowd went wild. There was ululating, whistling, screaming and they all went down on their knees as a sign of respect for their leader.

When Magaya appeared on stage the screams got louder and some people started going into trances. Some rushed to the front of the glitzy stage which was covered with a fiery orange and turquoise tent.

For the next hour or so people who were “possessed” rolled on the ground while some roared in the scariest voices. Some were vomiting unknown substances which the ushers quickly wiped away.

A woman in advanced stages of pregnancy had to be restrained by five strong ushers. Writhing and screeching like a parrot, she exhibited such strength that was not expected of a person in her condition.

Even young children could also be seen running around in apparent trance with glazed looks on their faces. Ushers had a torrid time trying to contain scores of people who kept throwing themselves on the ground and rolling with their faces contorted.

Magaya remained on the stage commanding the “demons” to go. Some became aggressive and appeared as if they wanted to grab him off the stage but he remained unperturbed.

Then the healings began. people holding up wheelchairs and walking sticks could be seen dancing around claiming they had been healed.
A woman who said she was from Chiredzi said she had not walked for six months but when the prophet walked in she was instantly healed. Another woman from Wedza also received her miracle healing after spending 10 years in a wheel chair.

Magaya later shared the word which he drew from the book of Esther 7 verse 10. He also addressed the popular subject of poverty and said after the event some would become millionaires if they believed.

“Let us kick poverty away and return it to sender. Say no to poverty, refuse to be poor,” he said.

The event which will obviously be talked about for a very long time was attended by some dignitaries who included Industry and Commerce minister Mike Bimha, Lands deputy minister Tendai Savanhu, ZRP’s Assistant Commissioner Crispen Makedenge, and Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive Karikoga Kaseke.

People being taken for a ride once more. These prophets are always ululating about numbers they attract as if its a soccer match. They still use the same tricks talking about poverty and making empty promises like telling people that they will prosper provided they believed, but I thought by them coming in large numbers means they believe. The truth is you do not just become a millionaire by attending a Friday gathering and believing. If you want to be a millionaire you have to work very hard whether you believe or do not believe you can be a milloonaire.

Even in Acts they wrote about 3000 people who were saved in one service, 5000 were added further, Jesus fed 5000 and other 4000…..why where the people counted and why were the numbers written in the Bible…..and there is a book called Numbers….GOD is interested in Numbers

You see herein lies the problem. We are lifting up man. “Magaya wows crowd.” No Jesus????? If Jesus is not the crown puller something is very very wrong. Man has usurped the position of Christ as the Head of His Church. To say that I am deeply concerned about all this is an understatement. Jesus Christ is supposed to be central, supreme and utterly preeminent in ALL things. Signs and wonders are not necessarily a sign that this is of God. True repentance would be! Are we one of those generations that runs after signs and wonders? Truly, we need to come back to the rue gospel! Christ crucified as Paul preached.

As long as the Preachers are preaching and healing through the word of God that is acceptable. When we see teaching that do not go in line with the Bible,s teaching then we will definitely question. The Bible says we have to wait and see the results that follows immediately after everything that took place. These are the signs that will tell us that this was the power of God.

Why should you, PHYLLIS MBANJE, Reporter, not find out why people were going into trances? When you say people were “possessed” what do you mean? Why are Zimbabweans the only to be “possessed”? Why did you not find out what this substance which some were vomiting was? Why not take a sample to a laboratory to find out what this substance is? Why was the pregnant woman screeching like a parrot? Why would innocent you children be involved in so-called evil spirits and running around in a trance? Why subject innocent children to such trauma? What are “demons”? Where do they coma from and where do they go when Magaya orders them to go? What is the scientific logic behind a person in a wheeel chair being able to stand up instantly when Magaya says so? What is the connection between a white man’s Bible (with Esther7 verse 10) with black man Magaya’s healing? He said people would become millionaires? Did he say when and how? If you are a reporter it is incumbent upon you to find out not just stand there too scared to delve deeper – what ever happened to investigative journalism? I want answers from you.

Some sentences should read, “Why are Zimbabweans the only ones to be “possessed”?” Where do these “demons” come from and where do they go when Magaya orders them to go?” “What is the scientific logic behind a person in a wheel chair being able to stand up instantly when Magaya says so?”

I am very upset that small innocent children are being subjected to such trauma in the presence of government officials who should be protecting children. It is absolutely diabolical. Where are the Human Rights organisations? I think these unfortunate children should be protected until they are old enough to decide for themselves whether to go into trances or not or to be possessed, whatever that is.

When Jesus was healing the sick he never called a Press Conference to say please come and see how I am healing the sick. This was the Son Of God. Where are we getting these scriptures of inviting the Herald and every Press to come and witness God,s work. Glory goes back to God if it is God,s work. But. What surprises me is that these so called Prophets give themselves Titles, and at the end of the day some of the things are questionable? These are end times lets not just be caught up with some of these fake miracles. A lot will miss the truth about God.

Zimbabweans want a Church where the Pastor travels by a scotchcart to go to Church, wearing oversized old donated clothes, feeding on sadza nematemba daily, preaching that poverty is godliness, telling people that being sick is a lesson God gives you to learn something….do this man of God you will be considered a genuine…. i would rather be blessed and called fake than to live under the curse so that people can call me true… PAMBERI NE PROSPERITY 3JOHN2….JOHN 14 VS 2…..PHILLIPIANS 4VS19…DEUTERONOMY 28…..

Gentleman and ladies can I point out that a prophet does not just come on the scene just like that.First of all prophets are born under signs,I mean visible signs that can be remebered to say there was such an incident that took place when a vessel deemed a prophet was born.A true prophet seldom dwells on issues to do with money.A true prophet has Thus Saith The Lord and knows the future from the beginning. There is one prophet for this age who saw 7 visions of what is what happened, what is happening now and what is going to happen.Search for this prophet and for your spiritual benefit believe his message for he has Thus saith the Lord.

    • Munhu waMwari November 10, 2014 at 11:47 am #

@Thinkaboutit, waudzwa nani rubish yako iyoyo. Iwe ita izvozvo but kunana Agubusanoita zvoku dramatiser what do u say about that. its not always by formulae. When Jesus prophesied to Nathaniel did he say Thus saith the Lord. when he prophesied to the Samaritan woman did he say Thus saith the Lord? Our generation follow Jesus and thus we do as he did. Paul said imitate me as i imitate Christ, do u want Paul to come back and we follow his way of life again. Do you know the upbringing of every born child in the world to say, yaa ndakagara ndaona mazvarirwe ake kuti achazove muporofita.

  21. Thinkaboutit November 10, 2014 at 11:32 am #

Karigamombe you hit it right on the head, during the time of the Lord Jesus there used to be big congregations but never did we hear He invited the Press conference to come and cover the event of healing the sick, feeding the 5000 and so forth. In most cases He would even tell the healed not to tell anyone but these so called prophets of these days invite the news reporters and brag about attracting big crowds. Here it is people just glorifying themselves instead of pointing all the Glory and Honour to God Himself.
