The accident happened around 11:20pm at the 205km peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway.

Police spokesperson, senior assistant commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the accident yesterday, saying 13 people including the Mazda Bongo driver died on the spot.

“Twenty-two people were injured and rushed to Kotwa Hospital where two others died while being transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare,” Charamba said.

Four people escaped the accident unhurt.

Charamba said the Mazda Bongo had 23 members of the Mwazha sect on board when the driver lost control after hitting two big stones in his lane and swerved into the opposite lane where it collided head on with the bus which had 16 passengers on board.

“Police are conducting investigations into the circumstances which led to this tragic and unfortunate accident,” she said.

“The names of the deceased will be released in due course once their next-of-kin have been advised.”

The Harare-Nyamapanda highway is becoming one of the most dangerous roads in the country. Another 46 people perished in January this year along the same road when a Zupco bus collided with a Pioneer bus at the 35km peg along the Harare-Mutoko road.

Another 13 lives were lost in August last year when a Zupco bus coming from Malawi veered off the road at the 22km peg near Shamva turn-off.
