Emerging hip-hop artist Mesha King has officially stepped onto the music scene with the release of his debut single Durag, a track anchored on themes of unity, identity, and social consciousness.

Born Prosper Maronda, the rising musician says his music is driven by a desire to address inequality and inspire collective progress, rather than engage in partisan politics.

“Injustice and inequality may have been fought on battlefields in the past, but today they require new strategies,” said Mesha King in an interview.

“I’m not into politics—I’m about promoting unity, peace, and the common good among Zimbabweans.”

The dreadlocked artist describes his sound as a fusion of hip-hop, Afro-fusion, and dancehall, blending modern influences with strong African identity. His debut marks a transition from making music for leisure to pursuing it as a full-time career.

“Some consider my views radical, but what builds a people is truth,” he said. “As young Zimbabweans, we must embrace our diversity and use it as strength to respond to today’s challenges.”

Mesha King revealed that his creative process is deeply reflective, often drawing inspiration from meditation.

“When I sit and reflect, I come up with verses that turn into meaningful music. What started as something I did for fun is now becoming my livelihood,” he added.

Inspired by artists such as Freeman HKD, as well as international stars, he believes music carries a deeper purpose beyond entertainment.

“Music is powerful. It speaks to everyone—from ordinary people to leaders. It carries the voice of the people and the hope for a better future,” he said.

Despite drawing influence from global acts, Mesha King remains grounded in his Zimbabwean roots, often incorporating Shona into his music to connect authentically with local audiences.

“Our language is our identity. I want my music to speak directly to my people—about culture, unity, and the realities we face,” he said.

He added that his genre choices reflect his versatility and provide creative freedom to tell stories that matter, including his personal journey of overcoming challenges and staying focused.

“My music is about self-love, resilience, and pride in who we are as Africans,” he said.

The single Durag was recorded in Gweru by DJ Cyclone Cee and marks the beginning of what the artist hopes will be a meaningful and impactful musical journey.

With a message rooted in unity and purpose, Mesha King is positioning himself as more than just an entertainer—but a voice for his generation.
