PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe’s sister and former Zvimba MP Sabina Mugabe, who died yesterday, has been declared a national heroine by the Zanu PF politburo.
Sabina (76) died at the Avenues Clinic in Harare yesterday morning after a long illness and will be buried at the National Heroes Acre on Sunday.Rugare Gumbo, Zanu PF spokesperson, told journalists after a brief politburo meeting yesterday that Sabina was unanimously accorded the national heroine status.
Zanu PF conferred the status without consulting its partners in government –– the two MDC formations. The conferment of heroes’ status is one of the outstanding issues of the global political agreement that gave birth to the formation of the inclusive government last year.
Sabina was born on October 14 1934 and was actively involved in politics before and after Independence.She left active politics due to ill-health before the 2008 harmonised elections.
Sabina, who was nearly 10 years junior to her brother Robert Mugabe, served as MP for Makonde East in 1985 and later became the legislator for Zvimba South from 1990 to 2008.
She was also a member of the Zanu PF Women’s League serving as its national secretary for production and labour. — Staff Writer.
