Civil servants call off strike

Comment & Analysis
BY KUDZAI CHIMHANGWA CIVIL servants are backtracking on their threat to go on strike tomorrow with teachers saying they are now giving the government up to Wednesday to address their plight.

A meeting between government negotiators and the Apex Council, which represents all civil servants, will be held on Wednesday for another round of salary talks.

Leaders of the Apex Council were also quoted in reports yesterday saying they want to give negotiations a chance.

A meeting between the unions, Minister of Public Service, Eliphas Mukonoweshuro and Finance minister Tendai Biti on Thursday failed to yield a solution forcing the civil servants to threaten going on strike tomorrow.

Sifiso Ndlovu, the Zimbabwe Teachers Association CEO confirmed that the strike was not going ahead.

“Biti was clearly unable to explain how priority was given to various government departments in terms of resource allocation,” Ndlovu said.
