Clayton Gango (23) and his girlfriend Esnath Gwanza (26) have since been issued with warrants of arrest by magistrate Learnmore Mapiye after they failed to turn up on the second day of their trial on Wednesday.
Appearing for the state, Makamera Waini told the court that on February 20, Clayton was drinking beer with his girlfriend Esnath at Mucheke beer hall.
At around 0100 hours, his wife Chipo Madziwira (23), who is the complainant, heard that her husband had been arrested for public drinking and followed him to Chikato Police Station.
Halfway, she met Clayton with Esnath. She confronted the two lovebirds and Esnath hit her with a beer bottle on her lips and forehead before fleeing the scene.
Clayton then allegedly dragged his wife and assaulted her with clenched fists and open palms, the court heard.
Chipo sustained a cut on the forehead.
