The day awards eluded Macheso

Standard People
BY SIMBARASHE MANHANGO When sungura music maestro Alick Macheso was nominated in three categories at the recent National Arts Merit Awards, many people predicted that he would pocket at least one award.

It was apparent that even the musician himself had the confidence that he was the favourite in all categories.

Clad in a white T-shirt and a pair of black jeans, the celebrated sungura musician made his glorious entry into 7 Arts Theatre accompanied by his prolific dancer Franco Slomo.

There were cheers in the auditorium as Macheso made his grand entry.

Many among the crowd were prepared to cheer Macheso even more, anticipating that he would make it to the stage to get an award, or even awards. The musician took a seat next to information minister, Webster Shamu.

He waited for the announcement of winners in the three categories where he was nominated in the Outstanding Song, Outstanding Album and Outstanding Musician categories.

As the awards progressed with various artists in different genres receiving their accolades, the peak of the ceremony was yet to come, where the battle was between Macheso, Kapfupi and Winky D, all vying for the Outstanding Song and Outstanding Album awards.

The category for Outstanding Song came, the nominees were announced and Macheso waited in anticipation. Kapfupi was announced the winner. Macheso remained rooted to his seat.

Besides losing out on this one, he still hoped to make a return to winning ways and claim the Outstanding Album title.

To his further surprise the award was scooped by Winky D for his wildly popular compilation, Igofigo.

Winky D made way to the stage with his mother dressed in the same colours, a clear indication that Winky knew this day would come.

Macheso could have been feeling the heat in his seat as there was just one category to go. But he might still have hoped he would get this last one and show people why he is called the King of Sungura.

The audience waited for the Outstanding Musician category.

The nominees were announced and Macheso’s fans crossed their fingers and prayed for a win. However, their hearts sank as Sulumani Chimbetu was announced the winner.

Clad in a fancy red shirt, blue jeans and red snickers, Sulumani made his way to the stage to receive his well-deserved and earned accolade.

For Macheso the awards were over and it was time to look forward to the 11th edition of the Nama awards.

Probably Macheso was hoping that his consolation for the night would be in the People’s Choice category.

All the hope was blown as this very last section of the awards ceremony went to Winky D again.

The reggae star proved to be the people’s favourite.

It was time for sungura star to make his proverbial “Nichodemus exit”.

He sneaked from any interviews with the media. Unlike his great entry, his exit was unnoticed.

When reached for comment on what had transpired at the awards, William Tsandukwa, Macheso’s band manager said the fact that Macheso had missed out on the awards did not mean anything since his supporters still saw him as the best in sungura circles.

“Losing at the awards, to us, means nothing at all.

“We have won awards in the past but they haven’t really added anything, despite losing his fans still regard him the best. However we congratulate all those who won”.
