By SIMBARASHE MANHANGO Nineteen-year-old Clara Matenga is the reigning Miss Teen Zimbabwe after she shrugged off more than 26 contestants during a night of stiff competition in which all were vying for the same title.

On the day she was crowned Miss Teen Zim, she recalls the experience as something that came as a shock to her.

“I was very excited and when I heard my name being called, I sat there for a moment frozen and finally stood up, but it came as a shock to me.”

“At first it was like, maybe I will win or not and I could best describe it as a 50-50 situation, I was weighing my chances.”

“The competition was tough since everyone wanted the crown but I guess the judges did what they know best,” said Clara.

She is a determined, fun loving young woman who was brought up in a Catholic family and the second born in a family of three. Clara stays in the suburbs close to Harare International Airport and she is obsessed with literature. During her spare time she enjoys listening to music and writing poetry. She is also into clothing designing.

More interestingly, Clara has got a vision, a dream that is deeply rooted in her belief that anything is possible in life. She wants to work with the United Nations and probably become the secretary-general of the world body one day. Clara went to Marlborough Primary School and later attended Hatfield Girls High as an Arts Student and attained eight points. Her modelling journey started when she was young.

“I always had a passion for modelling and I knew that one day, I was going to walk on the ramp and strut my stuff.”

She has got every reason to smile, basking in the glory of winning the Miss Teen Zim title, an all-expenses-paid-for return flight to Texas, USA, one week’s accommodation at the Hilton Hotel, designer wear for the Miss Teen World final, US$500 cash, a laptop and a 3G cellphone, plus US$250 spending money for the trip and other vouchers.

For qualifying to the Miss Teen World Final, Clara won a three-year tuition scholarship at Barclay College in America. Her priority is to first pursue her education.

“I’m a model and I have a lot of responsibilities on my shoulders right now but I’m definitely going to university in September.”

“I will first do a degree in History and International Studies and later do the other one in Child Psychology,” she said.

She is set to board a flight to the United States to represent Zimbabwe during Miss Teen World 2011, which will be held in Houston, Texas, in early August.

Clara will make presentations about the importance of birth records and has got a lot of activities prepared for her. She is set to travel two days before the event  accompanied by her mother.

“It’s a fact that parents need to see what their children are doing and this will be a trend that all queens are accompanied by their parental guardians,” said one of the organisers of the pageant.According to the organisers of the pageant, the third edition of the pageant will not be held in Harare but it will be up to the contestants to choose the venue of their choice.“We are already planning the next event but it will definitely not be held in Harare, the contestants will be given a chance to make their own choice.”“It will also give a chance to other contestants countrywide to take part,” said the organiser.
