Styx Mhlanga, the director of the play told StandardLife&Style that Makhulumo went to Harare last week to attend the shooting of the film, Gentleman and when she returned, she was no longer feeling well.
“She was drained of energy when she came back and we realised that she would not be able to make it anymore,” said Mhlanga.
“We embark on a rigorous rehearsal programme that runs the whole day hence she would not have been able to cope”.
Mpofu is not new to acting on stage. She has previously showcased her talent in plays such as The Mask, Dambudzo and Green and Sexy.
Mhlanga said Mpofu also fitted very well into the script.
“Mother Courage (the lead actress after which the play was named) is actually slim built and Mpofu has the kind of body that fits that description very well. Remember this is a war play and the actors have to look almost emaciated. She is a perfect fit in this case”.
Mpofu said in an interview on the sidelines of rehearsals for the play that she is ready for her new role although she described it as “challenging”.

“Although challenging, I am glad because I have support from fellow actors and actresses as well as others who are not part of this production,” she said. “Cast members have also helped me settle into the play quite easily”.
