Kawondera for FC Platinum

BY FANUEL VIRIRI FORGOTTEN Zimbabwe striker Shingi Kawondera and a battery of international and local players are being courted by chequebook giant FC Platinum. The Zvishavane side coach Rahman Gumbo has been given a blank cheque to beef up his squad and challenge for the premiership title. Gumbo said he was in the hunt for players but has been keeping the list to his chest.

However, it is understood that FC Platinum have started negotiations with Kawondera, who was turning out for Cyprus side Dighenis Morphou and could be signed anytime if the club met his personal terms.

Kawondera, who trained with the club on Friday, is reported to be demanding US$40 000 signing on fee. FC Platinum have already concluded negotiations with former TP Mazembe player Mthulisi Maphosa. The cash-rich club is also chasing two Malawian players who are said to be also training with the club. The deal to bring Dynamos goalkeeper Washington Arubi is also still to be concluded.

The platinum miners are also chasing Gunners’ Ali Sadiki, who has just recovered from an injury and wants out of Chando Kupisa.

FC Platinum are leaving no stone unturned in their bid to capture the premiership title as they also recalled striker Nelson Mazivisa, who had been loaned out to Gweru-based Division One side Zimbabwe Alloys. Mazivisa is set to join FC Platinum on Tuesday together with Shabanie Mine’s Farai Mususunye. From the looks of things, it seems FC Platinum are likely to be the busiest of all the premiership clubs buoyed by their financial muscle.

The club currently has the record signing after splashing US$65 000 to get the services of Joel Ngodzo from Highlanders.

The club with deep pockets also captured reigning Soccer Star of the Year Charles Sibanda and Bhekhi Ncube among the high profile-players from the domestic league.

However, it is their interest in Kawondera that is likely to set tongues wagging on the market as the player, who horned his skills at Darryn T as a youth player in 1997, is yet to feature for a local club in the last 11 years.

He featured for the Darryn T in 1998 and 1999.

Kawondera, who turns 29 on July 31, has played abroad for the better part of his career and the only time the locals saw him was when he was called for the Warriors.

Between 1999 and 2002 Kawondera played for the Polish clubs Górnik Zabrze before signing for Cypriot Cypriot First Division outfit AEP Paphos during the 2005. In 2005-2006 he played for the Turkish club Gaziantepspor.

In 2007 he moved back to Africa and joined Supersport United in South African Premier Soccer League.

In July 2007 he signed a two-year contract with the Cypriot club AEK Larnaca. However, in January 2008, he moved to Nea Salamina. He has been in Cyprus since switching clubs in that country.
