Police ban Misa concert

Comment & Analysis
By Kudzai Chimhangwa   Police in Harare yesterday banned a concert by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zimbabwe chapter to campaign for the opening up of airwaves despite earlier granting the group permission to stage the show.

The concert slated for Warren Park One Shopping Centre dubbed “Free the Airwaves Now” was organised in collaboration with the Artists for Democracy in Zimbabwe Trust, who cancelled the event following a police ban.

“They banned the event. They said the manner in which the event had been publicised in a certain newspaper was different from what had been agreed upon in our clearance letter,” said Misa director Nhlanhla Ngwenya.

“This is clearly an erosion of our rights to affirm and express ourselves.”

Police Spokesperson, Inspector James Sabau said he needed time to verify the information and was unable to comment before the time of going to press.
