Nigerian envoy shocked by Zimbabweans’ docility

Comment & Analysis
WEST Africans in Zimbabwe said they were shocked at the high level of tolerance by Zimbabweans who remained peaceful in the face of suffering and hardship, former Nigerian ambassador, Kunle Adeyanju commented.

According to the latest dispatch of cables by wikileaks, the Nigerian envoy told US officials that he was shocked that Zimbabweans spent their time in queues without so much as batting an eyelid.

“They line up for hours to get a few dollars from their bank accounts,” Adenyaju said. “Then they go home and do their chores and come back the next day and line up again. If this was Nigeria we would burn the bank down.”

The Nigerian envoy also expressed concern that Zimbabwean officials seemed to have different meetings for African and Western envoys where they relayed different information between the two groups.

His comments were particularly targeted at Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials. Just before presenting his credentials to Mugabe, Adenyaju was almost booted out after Olusegun Obasanjo said the Zimbabwean leader must go.

However, Mugabe served the envoy, maintaining that, Obasanjo was misinformed about events in Zimbabwe. — Our Staff
