Vusi Ndebele, a music teacher at the institution and organiser of the competition told StandardLife&Style that the competition was aimed at “all those who are able to use a drum kit”.
“The competition is open to all drummers in the city. Experienced, emerging and aspiring drummers have a chance to showcase their talent. It is not often that we have competitions for drummers and I think this will be an exceptional event,” said Ndebele.
The competition has been organised by the Academy of Music’s School of Rock under the department of contemporary music.
“The competition will take place over two days (November 18 and 19) to give the competitors ample time to display their expertise. On the first day drummers would be given certain tasks to perform using a drum kit.”

He said the following day would involve polishing up the acts before a winner is announced.
“The winning drummer will walk away with a new drum kit from the academy. The aim of Drum Off is to highlight the importance of formal music training among drummers in the city as well as link young drummers with professional musicians so that they can get opportunities to perform live on stage.”
Ndebele said live performances “act as a launch pad for young drummers to get into the music industry”.
Registration for interested drummers is ongoing at the academy until November 11.
