Mashonaland West fails to hold elections

Comment & Analysis
BY NUNURAI JENA  ZANU PF Mashonaland West provincial elections were postponed again yesterday in a move widely viewed as a protest against President Robert Mugabe’s alleged blocking of business mogul Phillip Chiyangwa from contesting the post of provincial chairman.

His disqualification is said to have angered his multitude of supporters. Chiyangwa rejoined Zanu PF as an ordinary card carrying member after being suspended over espionage allegations but Mugabe allegedly blocked him from contesting for the post of provincial chairman.

Addressing about 500 delegates at Selous Sports Club near Chegutu yesterday, Zanu PF acting provincial chairperson Reuben Marumahoko said they could not elect a new leadership as planned because the party’s secretary for administration Didymus Mutasa issued a directive against it.

But Mutasa refuted such allegations insisting that the elections should have gone ahead so that the province can be represented by an elected executive at next month’s conference in Bulawayo.
