By Brian Nkiwane The 10th edition of the National Youth Games Local Organising Committee (LOC) has released a list of venues and villages that will be used during the event to be held in the Mashonaland Central capital, Bindura.
The games are expected to burst into life just after the national census programme at the beginning of August when the schools close for holiday. According to games chief executive officer Stan Kasukuwere, the team that was at the launch visited the venues and the villages and most of them were satisfied. “We visited the venues and the villages and concluded that the structures need to be spruced up. As for the villages, much work needs to be done in the face of disease outbreaks such as cholera and typhoid,” Kasukuwere said. Athletics for both men and women will be held at Chipadze and Trojan grounds. Handball for both man and women will be held at Bradley and Howard while netball will be held at Chipadze with football for women to be played at Bradley. Men’s football will be played at Chipadze Stadium. Women volleyball will be at Hermann Gmeiner while men’s volleyball will be at Country Club. Tennis for both men and women will be played at Barwick while basketball for both men and women will be at Mazowe High. Boxing will be held at Tendai Hall. Other venues are Bindura University, Bradley, Howard, Chipadze, Chipindura, Barwick, Mazowe High, Bindura Primary and Gmeiner Primary. A team of experts will soon be moving in to renovate the venues and the villages to required standards. A total of 16 beasts, 45 tonnes of maize and US$12 000 cash were donated during the launch. The games will be used to select athletes for the Zone VI Games to be held in Zambia in December.
