Roadblocks everywhere

Has anyone noticed the number of  roadblocks on our roads of late? Is this to prevent accidents, discourage teenage speedsters and arrest drunk Friday-night chefs? Or is there a more fascinating explanation that has yet to be divulged to the public? Strangely, these roadblocks bring to mind such phenomena of Pharoah’s biblical locusts.

One has, of course, to admire the imagination of our guardians of the law. Their reasons for fining motorists range from CSI Miami to the truly exotic — all performed with a straight face, sometimes with ironic humour and just occasionally with a self-deprecating wink. They obviously know something we don’t.

US$20, US$100, or even US$1000 can be demanded. Would it not be better for their souls if we found something more constructive and community-oriented for them to do. Paint white lines on the roads, remove advertising   blocking traffic intersections or chasing villains?  A little re-training of our more senior officers might help, of course.  And possibly a reminder that a traffic policeman/woman should be a driver’s best friend!
