‘Gri…eshe!’ Siyaya Arts bring the Spirit of Imbube to Hifa

The production launches on April 27 in Bulawayo and will run for two days before coming to Harare to delight Hifa’s audiences.

Gri…eshe! features some of Matebeleland’s finest performers, including Black Umfolozi, Siyaya, Jeys Marabini, Willis Watafi, Family Voices, Umdumo Wesizwe, and Simon Banda .

The 33 strong ensemble will take audiences on a song and dance journey through the traditions of Imbube music, from its origins in South African mines to the fierce song and dance competitions which have developed from this a capella heritage.

Evocative, powerful and spirit raising, this energetic performance commemorates the past and powerfully affirms our potential.

Tumbuka’s Director Tawanda Chabikwa collaborates with Shi Pratt

AN Israeli American based in Norway, Shi Pratt, has danced in several prestigious dance companies and worked with many renowned choreographers, including Ohad Naharin, Sharon Eyal, Maya Lipsker, Fiksdal/Lie, Eldad Ben Sasson, Arkadi Zaides, Inbal Pinto, Avshalom Pollak and our own Soukaina Edom.  Presented with the assistance of UD, Norsk Kulturråd and Mind the Gap, her collaboration with Tawanda Chabikwa, director of our own world renowned Tumbuka Dance Contemporary Company, will be a wonderful treat for those who love the dance genre.

Shi’s solo BARK is inspired by the context during which composer Ravel, teasing the piano while on holiday at St Jean de Luz, gave birth to his most famous musical composition.

Tawanda Chabikwa, Zimbabwean dancer, choreographer, writer, photographer, artist and current Artistic Director of Tumbuka, will deliver an equally riveting solo, “Digression in the Fourth Movement”, in which object theatre and dance are used to shift the context and relevance of experience.

The work makes use of an original sound score incorporating voice, environmental sound and music, as the dancer moves through a contained field of bottles, to demonstrate a delicate deconstruction of a psychological landscape.

This stylish and intriguing contemporary dance show takes place in The Standard Theatre and should be added to any dance enthusiast’s list as a must-see.
