Whirling dervishes — Ziya Azazi in ‘Icons’

Family
Famous Turkish dancer Ziya Azazi is hugely acclaimed for his pioneering choreography based on the whirling rituals of the Sufi dervishes.

In Icons, he and his dancers are joined by French musician and composer Serge Adam, whose trumpet improvisations and electronic sampling build a sonic structure on which this extraordinary dance work is built.

Through rich choreography, progressive music and transcendent lighting, the bodies of the dancers powerfully engage with the concepts of ritual, tradition, passion and religion.

Icons demonstrates an experimental, repetitive and progressive approach, with whirling as the foundation of the choreography.

Azazi was born in Antakya, southern Turkey, and educated in istanbul, later moving to Vienna to pursue further studies.

While studying engineering at istanbul Technical University, he took up gymnastics, loved it, and so the foundation was laid for his prestigious career in contemporary dance.  Ballet, contemporary dance and gymnastics began to dominate his life, and soon,  dance was his life’s greatest passion.

From 1990 to 1994, he worked with istanbul City Theatre as a dancer and choreographer. After moving to Vienna in 1994 he worked with various dance companies until 1999.

He then embarked upon his research into Sufi whirling, taught himself the technique step by step and began to incorporate elements of the Sufi ritual into his choreographies.

Icons promises dance lovers a dramatic and novel first-hand experience of the power, drama, grace and skill of whirling.
