Dagga found in prison cell

Comment & Analysis
By Martin MuleyaIn a case that left tongues wagging, a convicted prisoner who was serving his sentence at Mutare Farm Prison was once again brought to the dock after he was found in possession of a twist of dagga.

The convict, who was at pains to explain how the dangerous drug found its way into the prison cell, brought the gallery into laughter when, in his defence, testified that he was the senior prisoner and had the right to possess the drug.

The court, led by prosecutor Christine Mwenga, heard that sometime in February last year Christopher Zivanai Kapfudzaruwa (31), who was a prisoner at Mutare Farm Prison, was coming from a nearby farm field where he had been working with other fellow inmates when an alert prison officer on duty, Itai Masanga, made a routine search.

In his defence, Zivanai indicated that he had served in Mutare Farm Prison since 2008 and that the dagga was found in his room and not on his person.

In her ruling, Mutare magistrate Ms Yeukai Chigodora slapped Kapfudza-ruwa with another two months which were wholly suspended for two years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.
