Butcher banks on confidence ahead of series

BY MICHAEL MADYIRANational cricket team coach Alan Butcher says his team needs “confidence and belief” as they take on Bangladesh and South Africa in the T-20 triangular series beginning at Harare Sports Club today.

Zimbabwe open the series against Bangladesh as they prepare for the World Cup of the game’s shortest version to be staged in Sri Lanka in September.

The Zimbabweans’ great emphasis has been placed on batting with the concern being worsened in two warm-up games against the Bangladesh on Friday as the top-order was not impressive,  save for Hamilton Masakadza who smashed a century in the second practice game.

Zimbabwe won by three wickets in the first match before posting a 19-run victory in the second.

“We are looking forward to the challenge. We just need stability, but more importantly we have to play with confidence and belief,” said Butcher.

Wicketkeeper Tatenda Taibu, who is out due to a left-hand index finger injury, joins Raymond Price and Kevin Kasuza on the sidelines.

South Africa and Bangladesh would be kept guessing by Zimbabwe as the hosts maintain their 25-man camping squad where Butcher would have selection options.

The South Africans, led by Hashim Amla in the absence of Johan Botha and AB de Villiers, are expected in the country at midday today.

Their sharp bowling, led by Lonwabo Tsotsobe and all rounder Albie Morkel, could prove to be handful to the hosts’ struggling batting side.

JP Duminy is also in the fold for South Africa.

Zimbabwe’s record at the T-20 World Cup is far from impressive after having lost thrice and won once in their only two appearances at the competition which inaugurated in 2007.
