Own CorrespondentSprinter Tinashe Mutanga (19) is aiming to qualify for the London Olympics after he was named in the 10-member provisional squad which will represent the country at the Africa Senior Track and Field Championships set for Benin from June 26 to 30.

The event will be the final Olympic qualifying round for the athlete.

The Eaglesvale upper-sixth student, who specialises in sprints and relay together with Francis Zimwaya, are the only locally-based athletes to participate in this tournament.

Long jumper Namatirai Mavugara and 800m star Faith Goremusango will represent the country in the female category.

Much is expected from a strong relay team that comprises United States-based star Gabriel Mvumvure, Malvern Bonde, Mutanga, Zimwaya and Antony Hobwana.Mutanga said he was more than ready for the championships.

“l’m training hard for the championships. I think we have a good team which can get good results in Benin. I’m looking forward to qualifying for the London Olympics for the first time,” he said.

National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) director of coaching, Tendai Tagara said he was hoping that his athletes would qualify for the Olympics.

“This will be the last round for the athletes, who are yet to qualify for the London Olympics. So we are hoping that they are going to record the fastest times since we have a good team in relay and long jumper Clive Chafausipo will also carry the national flag,’’ Tagara said.
