by Our Staff ZIMBABWE’S medal hopeful at the 2012 London Olympic Games, Kirsty Coventry takes to the pool this afternoon in the 100m backstroke at the Aquatics Centre.Coventry, who won silver in the same race at the 2008 Athens Olympic Games, sets the tone of the Games when she tweeted on Friday: “I’ll be carrying the flag tomorrow. Holding it high, representing Athletes, Women, Zimbabwe and Africa.”
If Coventry, who has seven Olympic medals to her name, progresses to the semi-finals, she will be back in the pool in the evening. The 28-year-old will tomorrow take to the pool in the 200m individual medley with the 100m backstroke final, that is if she progresses. The final of the 200m individual medley will be held on Tuesday. Coventry will have a rest day on Wednesday and only return to the pool on Thursday for the heats and semi-finals of the 200m backstroke where she is the reigning champion. The 200m backstroke final will be held on Friday. Long-distance runner Sharon Tavengwa competes in the women’s marathon on August 5 while triathlete Chris Felgate takes part in the men’s triathlon at Londons Royal Parks, Hyde Park on August 7. Long-distance runners Cuthbert Nyasango and Wirimayi Juwao will line up in the men’s marathon on August 12.
