Ousted MPs get second chance

The parliamentary and senatorial by-elections resulting from the recent Supreme Court ruling in favour of parliamentarians expelled by Professor Welshman Ncube’s party compelling President Mugabe to call for elections  is an opportunity for Professor Ncube to prove that his is the fastest growing political party in Zimbabwe. The elections are also an opportunity to measure the sincerity of political parties to zero tolerance to violence. It is said the parties in the inclusive government had made an arrangement that they would not contest each other in the event by-elections were held, but the case of former parliamentarians Abednico Bhebhe, Norman Mpofu and Njabuliso Mguni is different in that these by-elections have been brought about as a direct result of their court challenge. Most importantly, their court challenge was in their individual capacities, not as members of the MDC-T.

They, therefore deserve the opportunity to contest in the by-elections, even as independent candidates.

The three are heroes, who have set precedence for Zimbabwe, that presidents can be challenged if they behave unconstitutionally.
