By Problem Masau MUTARE City Council has expressed concern over the increasing number of stray dogs that roam around the city, posing a serious danger to residents, especially children. Mutare City Council town clerk, Obert Muzawazi, said there has been a noticeable increase of stray dogs in the city in the recent past.
“This has resulted in an outcry from members of the public, who are alarmed by this seemingly unnoticed large population of dogs roaming the streets during the night and in turn, causing many problems,” said Muzawazi.
He said the city had recorded a few cases of rabies during the recent past. “In the absence of adequate control measures, it may not take long before we have a human rabies case in the city,” he said.
Muzawazi said it was the responsibility of dog owners, in terms of the Mutare (Dog licensing and Control) by-laws, to ensure that pets remained securely confined within their properties at all times.
He added that the city’s health department would soon embark on a dog trapping exercise to remove stray dogs from the streets of Mutare.
