POWERTEL Communications (Pvt) Ltd (PowerTel), is a wholly owned subsidiary of Zesa Holdings. PowerTel operations were approved by the Ministry of Mines and Energy in accordance with the provisions of the Electricity Act. The registered office of PowerTel Communicationsis located at 10th Floor Kopje Plaza, Number 1 Jason Moyo Avenue, Harare. PowerTel is a licensed Internet Access Provider Class A (IAP Class A). Since its inception in 1999, the company has focused on the provision of data communications infrastructure services through the use of cable, wireless and power line communication technologies and is set to venture into fixed and mobile VOIP in 2012.
As a dynamic player in the telecommunications industry, PowerTel Communications focuses its energies on the high-growth data communications market. The company has continued to expand its presence into greater Harare, greater Bulawayo, Mutare, Masvingo, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Gweru, Bindura, Rusape, Marondera, Plumtree, Beitbridge, Gwanda and Chinhoyi.

By their nature, power companies require extensive telecommunications infrastructure that is used for System Control and Data Acquisition (Scada) — for monitoring the electricity grid. This equipment however was under-utilised as the purposes for which it was installed demanded low capacity. In line with world-wide trends, PowerTel was formed to unlock the embedded value within the infrastructure and human resource base, which value could be derived by commercialisation of this capacity. It was registered as a private company under the Companies Act (Chapter 24:03) in June 1999.
PowerTel was licenced by Potraz to operate a Public Data Network in February 2002. The Public Operator Data license awarded to PowerTel allowed for local, national and international data services. Since its inception in 1999, the company has focused on the provision of data communications infrastructure services through the use of cable, wireless and power line communications technologies. It has been at the forefront in bringing high speed, convenience and reliability in the transmission of data through this optic fibre network, for the efficient use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT’s) in Zimbabwe. Currently, PowerTel has two fibre based gateways to the undersea cable via Plumtree to Botswana Telecommunications and via Mozambique to Seacom.

Achievements PowerTel was the first company to own and operate an expanse optic fibre cable network in Zimbabwe.
We were the first company to offer state of the art Fibre Optic SDH Transmission System (STM16) Harare — Plumtree route (We are a carrier of carriers).
PowerTel is a pioneer — we were the first telecommunications company to offer REAL 3G Broadband Wireless Internet Access (Mobile Internet) through the CDMA technology. PowerTel has been in the mobile Internet business since 2007 offering unrivaled service.
We were the first to connect Zimbabwe to the global internet Village through Optic fibre to the submarine cable systems straight into Global Internet Exchange. We currently have two links through Botswana and through Mozambique to the undersea cables.
Products/Services Our service comes with speed, more efficiency and cost effective for the ultimate user due to the huge bandwidth provided delivered by optic fibre. Our four product lines are:
VPN (Virtual Private Networking) — services provided include Metro Ethernet links (64kbps to 10Mbps bandwidth, intra city/town) and intercity links (from 64kbps to 2Mbps) This service allows companies with branches spread countrywide to network their ICT resources as if they are in the same physical location or building.
Carrier — Intercity TDM leased circuits from E1 to multiples of STM-1. With this product, the client can lease bandwidth capacity of their choice according to bandwidth requirements.
Mobile internet — mobile wireless internet access ( At home and office) This service works off a CDMA technology and provides on the go internet access. At the moment the service is available in Harare, Norton, Kwekwe, Gweru and Bulawayo. Base stations are being installed in Kadoma, Ruwa, Marondera, Mutare, Chinhoyi, Chitungwiza and Chegutu. Service should be available in these areas soon after installation.
