A Mutare man will spend the next three months in jail after he defaulted paying maintenance for his three children.

Report by Our Correspondent Tapuwa Hutire, who was ordered to pay US$150 at the beginning of the year but reneged, appeared before Mutare regional magistrate, Langton Mukwengi last week.

This was after his wife, Regina Chiwore, made a formal complaint to the court that Hutire was refusing to pay maintenance, but was taking care of his brother’s children.

The brother is in South Africa.

“He gave me the money the first month, but after that he refused to pay. He has entirely given his back on the children and he expects me to respect the fact that he is taking care of his brother’s children,” Chikowore told the court.

Hutire denied the allegations saying he was only going through a financial crisis. Mukwengi sentenced Hutire to three months in jail.
