The former three-weight world champion, 50, was sitting in his car in the Puerto Rican city of Bayamon on Tuesday night when the attack occurred.

He was shot in the face, but miraculously survived the attack, which killed another man who was also in the car with Camacho during the attack.

The former world champ was rushed to hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Dr Ernesto Torres gave a statement to local reporters, saying “Camacho’s condition is extremely delicate.

“His physical condition will help him but we will see.”

He also explained the former boxer may be left paralysed from his injuries.

The doctor confirmed the bullet hit Camacho’s jaw and deflected into his shoulder, breaking two vertebrae.

Camacho is one of Puerto Rico’s most decorated boxers.  During his career he earned two decision victories over Roberto Duran and knocked out Sugar Ray Leonard.  He also had notable world title defeats to Oscar De La Hoya and Felix Trinidad.

His son, Hector Camacho Jr, is also a successful boxer.
