With the two teams not being separated after 120 minutes, Blessed Mbabavarira, Valentine Ndaba, William Ngonya, Victor Twaliki and Tafadzwa Mombeshora found the mark from the spot to help their side pocket the US$120 000 winner’s purse and also their third major trophy since 2001.

Obrey Chirwa missed the decisive spot kick for Platinum after Daniel Vheremu, Winston Mhango and Thabania Kamusoko had converted their spot kicks. Shabanie Mine coach Luke Masomere attributed the victory to team work.

“We rely on teamwork and I am happy we won the match. This is my first silverware with the team and I am happy. I am sure great things are in store for us in the future. I am just happy we have won the match, besides the problems we are facing,” said Masomere.

Man-of-the-match and captain Mombeshora said the team’s fans gave them the extra push.

“I knew we were going to win the match. We worked very hard in the final and looking at the calibre of the teams we beat on our way to the final, I think we deserved it. I also want to salute the fans for the support they have given us in this tournament,” Mambeshora said.

FC Platinum coach Lloyd Mutasa said they should have won the match in regulation time.

“It just wasn’t our day. This is a match that we were supposed to win in regulation time. However, the most important thing is to rise after this fall,” said Mutasa.

Shabanie Mine, whose band of supporters rooted for the team from the first whistle, played with more conviction, especially in the first half and Tarisai Rukanda, unmarked inside the box, headed wide of goal in the 21st minute.

Pervington Zimunya drew the best out of FC Platinum goalkeeper Francis Tizayi who parried his well-driven free kick for a corner kick.

Donald Ngoma had a chance to decide the match for his side midway through the first half, but headed straight at Shabanie goalkeeper Twaliki from a Charles Sibanda cross.

However, the second half saw FC Platinum coming out of their shell, enjoying more of the exchanges but they could not change the scoreline. A Ngoma header missed target in the 78th minute but the last clear chance was in the 115th minute when Nelson Mazivisa shot weakly at Twaliki.
