Dhewa succumbed to cancer on October 15 2011, and shows have been held annually to commemorate his work and life.

His son Peter Moyo will lead the celebrations at all the shows. The mega show of the commemorative weekend is expected to be a family show at Harare Gardens on October 20.

Organisers of the event said they would start the commemorations in Kwekwe, Dhewa’s hometown, to give his close family members and friends a chance to celebrate the life of the late musicians with other artists.

“The Kwekwe show is an important event in the commemorations,” said one of the organisers.

“We expect Dhewa’s friends, neighbours and relatives to come together and honour him. The musician loved his hometown so much. Most people saw him starting his career here and solely raising it until he became a force to reckon with.

“Despite such success, the musician did not opt to relocate to the capital city like most of his contemporaries from small towns. He kept his base in Kwekwe and the city was proud of him. It is because of that pride that the people of Kwekwe had in Dhewa that we chose to begin the commemorations in Kwekwe.”

A lot of activities are lined-up for the day in Kwekwe before a show is held in the evening.

The following day a contigent of artists participating in the programme heads for Chinhoyi. The Mashonaland West capital was one of Dhewa’s favourite hunting ground and his fans in that city would have a chance to relive the good old days with their icon.

The family show at Harare Gardens caps the commemorations. The show is expected to bring together families that adored the Utakataka Express founder in merrymaking and celebration.

Peter said he is honoured to work with various other artistes to remember the great work his father did in the music industry.

“I feel honoured when some of the big musicians in the industry take time off their busy scheduled to help me celebrate my father’s life. I do not know how to thank them. I am greatly humbled,” said Peter.

Musicians that are expected to take part in the commemorations include Alick Macheso, Sulumani Chimbetu, Progress Chipfumo and Romeo Gasa as well as raunchy dancer Beverly Sibanda.

Botswana songstress Slizer is also expected to grace the commemorations.
