Close to 80 motorcycle riders will take to the field keen to grab that confidence-boosting opening day success.
All eyes will be fixed on the country’s motocross top riders including Team Zimbabwe captain Jayden Ashwell, Jordan Dewdney, Tristan Grainger, Emmanuel Bako, as well as nine-year-old sensation Tanya Muzinda to provide the thrills and spills of motocross racing.
Rivalries are set to resume in various classes of the competition namely the PeeWee class, 50cc, 65cc, 85cc, 125cc and the ever popular MX1 class.
Zimbabwe Motorsport Federation spokesperson Temba Mazvimbakupa confirmed the start of the 2014 Motocross racing season.
“I can tell you that the motocross season begins at 10am this Sunday [today] at Donnybrook and we are expecting a better season in terms of the number of participants compared to last year.
“Motocross is a growing sport, we had a lot of young black participants last year and we are looking to continue to grow that number just to show that motocross is no longer a minority sport.

“We are trying to grow motorsport by reaching out to the generality of people and we are going to be very active to ensure that many people get the opportunity to join motorsport competitions,” he said.
Indeed the number of black motocross racers has been growing of late with the Mawarire brothers Tafadzwa, Mike and Tyler; Bako, Ryan Masimi, BJ Chitima (jr) and Muzinda doing remarkably well.
Mazvimbakupa commended the standard of the motocross in the country compared to other nations, especially in southern Africa. “We are doing very well as a country and I can safely say we are second to South Africa. But in junior categories, we are the best in the region,” he said.
He also revealed that the Telecel sponsored Drag racing was pencilled for April while other genres such as Kart racing, Main circuit and 4×4 club, to name a few, would get on board as the year progresses.
Motocross is an all-weather, physically demanding form of motorcycle racing held on enclosed off-road circuits.
