The decision was made at a meeting that was held in the capital early this month by the league’s supreme mother body (NRL).

This year, nine teams will compete in the top-flight league after the league’s hierarchy also decided not to relegate Zvishavane Bulls.

Mutare Sports Club ruled the roost in last year’s Metropolitan League winning most of their matches to gain promotion to play in the elite league.

In an interview with Standardsport last week, National Rugby league (NRL) chairman Nody Kanyangarara said they finally confirmed Mutare Sports Club as the ninth team.

“It’s now official, we have confirmed Mutare Sports Club as one of the clubs that will participate in this year’s league. We also did not relegate any team and by adding Mutare Sports Club this means nine teams will participate in this year’s season,” Kanyangarara said.

He added, “The reason why we are not relegating any team this year is we want to take the clubs tally to 10 next year. We hope we are going to have a competitive season.”

Mutare Sports Club Rugby section secretary Armsom Makumbe said they were eyeing for a memorable season in the top-flight.

“We are happy we are finally in. We have been training since January and I think the players are well-prepared for life in the topflight league,” he added.
