SUBSTITUTE Tineyi Chitora set up a stoppage time own goal by defender William Mapfumo before scoring a dramatic goal three minutes later as ZPC Kariba kept pressure on the early pacesetters with a hard-fought victory over Mutare City at Nyamhunga Stadium yesterday.

BY NUNURAİ JENA in Kariba Chitora, who had been introduced in the 54th minute, was the hero for Sunday Chidzambwa’s charges as his cross led to an own goal by Mapfumo in the first minute of stoppage time before putting the game well beyond City’s reach three minutes later.

Before the late goals, Mutare City had fought gallantly for the better part of the game with their goal keeper Philip Nhete pulling off some stunning saves before crumbling right at the end of the match.

Chikafa could not believe his eyes in the 30th minute when Nhete acrobatically tipped the ball over the bar with home team fans already celebrating

The first half was a tale of missed chances as both teams failed to utilise the few opportunities that came their way and the trend continued after the breather, until the introduction of Chitora, who ignited the game with some brilliant moves down the flanks.

Chidzambwa said he was happy that his charges managed to collect maximum points despite struggling to finish off their opponents in regulation time.

“It doesn’t matter how they come, three points is three points. We missed so many chances, we could have wrapped the match in the first half,” said Chidzambwa.

Mutare City coach, Tapiwa Shariwa was dejected as he thought his charges had done enough to collect a point from the match.

“It’s unfortunate that our defender had to score for them; it was unimaginable and unthinkable mistake but that happens in a game of football,” said Shariwa.
