NGEZI Platinum Stars are through to the quarter-finals of the Chibuku Super Cup after beating visiting Hwange at Baobab Stadium in Ngezi yesterday.

Terrance Dzukamanja netted a brace either side of the half-time break before the exciting Donald Teguru made sure of the win on 78th minute after Gilbert Zulu had briefly levelled the scoreline on 46th minute.

Ngezi Platinum coach Tonderai Ndiraya was naturally pleased with the perfomance of his side.

“I’m happy that we have progressed to the next round. That is what we wanted. I’m also happy that the team managed to score some goals today, something that they haven’t managed to do of late. We would need to improve though because from here we will be playing more experienced sides,” Ndiraya said.

Hwange coach Mbebelo Njekwa said his team’s flat perfomance was reflective of the problems in his camp as players have reportedly gone for several months without receiving their salaries.

“If you saw the body language of the players, you could see something is not okay. As an organisation, things are not well. We did well though under the circumstances, but again, schoolboy blunders by our goalkeeper cost us the game,” Njekwa said.

The hosts got an ideal start to the match when Dzukamanja bundled home a loose ball inside the box following a corner kick by Tatenda Muchisa just after five minutes.

Hwange were the better side afterwards, hurrying the hosts to make some mistakes, but it was still Dzukamanja’s goal which separated the two teams going to the breather.

Hwange started the second-half frantically and were soon to be rewarded for their efforts when Zulu received the ball with his back at goal before turning sharply inside the box to beat a diving Ngezi goalkeeper Chris Mverechera.

A goalkeeping error by Hwange goalie Future Sibanda, who had looked suspicious in dealing with set pieces earlier on, then gifted Ngezi with a second goal before Teguru wrapped up the win after his looping header from a freekick found the bottom corner.

Hwange tried their best to come back into the game, but Ngezi were able to see off the match comfortably.
