He told The Standard Style at his “surgery” in Hatfield — where hordes of people with various ailments, especially spiritual ones, were waiting their turn to get assisted — that he specialises in casting bad spirits out of people and “fencing them” afterwards so that they don’t become susceptible to witchcraft again.

Katerere, who is also a Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers Association (Zinatha) national inspector, said his powers were derived from the spirit of his ancestor Katerere Musoni, who was known as Nyandoro Mbudzi Iripazuva. Musoni died in Mozambique and was left on a rock but his body is reported to have later disappeared.

“I conduct my sessions sitting on a spear to show the extent of the power of the spirit that possesses me,” he said.

“This spirit has managed to help a lot of people, transform their lives, as well as repair broken families and marriages which were torn apart by witchcraft.”

“I can make a person speak to his or her ancestors. Through this, lots of people have been helped to solve a lot of mysteries in their families. Most families are affected by crimes committed by their fathers. There are avenging spirits which affect people in getting jobs, marriages and bad omens. These are things that we help people with.

“There are those with mermaid spirits, we take them to the pools and do rituals that are supposed to be done. Many people have tried to come up with negativities about mermaids but the truth is that they are part of the African culture. In every religion there are rogue elements which would have deviated from the commandments of religion, even in Christianity there are rogue and fake prophets. Quite a number of people need such ceremonies to appease mermaid spirits in them, but they don’t know how to do it.”

Katerere said most of the spiritual problems manifested themselves in diseases, which were only curable through traditional ways.

“We have diseases like cancer, diabetes and sexual malfunctiong, among both sexes. These are some of the curable diseases which affects people. We also have a number of people who come back and testify on how they got helped here,” he said.

Katerere said despite healing, he also conducts national duties like rain-making ceremonies and praying for peace in the country.

“As a medium of a great national spirit, I also lead the rain-making ceremony every year. During times where there are disturbances in the country like demonstrations or during elections, we pray for peace,” he said.
