Club Mandisa director, Bornface Nyamanhindi said the new event was aimed at promoting sungura musicians and providing a platform for sungura lovers in the city.

Sungura music is a genre with a huge following in Zimbabwe.

“Sungura music is without doubt the most followed genre in the country. We have decided to host sungura gigs at least once every month so that we cater for the growing numbers of sungura lovers,” said Nyamanhindi.

“We have also discovered that each time we host a sungura band, we have a huge turn-up and concluded that sungura music must be on our entertainment menu.

“As a promoter it is also my wish to see sungura music’s popularity growing and maintaining its dominance in the entertainment sector. We will be working closely with the sungura groups and musicians so that we keep sungura lovers entertained.”

To kick start the show, rising sungura musician, Romeo Gasa and his Extra Valembe put up a polished performance at the venue and left fans clamouring for more.

Commenting after the show Gasa said the event will help in exposing sungura musicians to their fans.

“This event helps us to reach out to our different audience and we are happy that we will always be connected with our fans. We are happy to be associated with this event,” he said.

Veteran singer Hosiah Chipanga said the sungura nights at Club Mandisa would help to resuscitate his musical career and re-unite him with his legion of fans.

“It will be nice to perform at that venue and re-unite with my fans. This is what we have been waiting for and since we have a new Zimbabwe, we hope that will usher change,” said Chipanga.

“We are now geared to reconnect with the fans and it is through these shows that we become constantly active.”

Sungura musician Brian Samaita echoed the same sentiments.

“As a musician, I feel very proud that we will be one of the groups to perform at the venue. This will give us an opportunity to cement our relationship with our local fans. This is indeed a noble cause,” he said.

Nyamanhindi said top sungura artists, including Alick Macheso will perform at the joint.

“It is without doubt that Macheso is the face of sungura music and we will open up negotiations so that he becomes a regular performer at Club Mandisa,” he said.

Other artists to take part at The Sungura Nights include Peter Moyo, Somandla Ndebele, Simon Mutambi and Tatenda Pinjisi, among others.
