A local Chinese-owned solar supply company Yao Wei Tech has donated rechargeable solar lamps to assist communities in the Cyclone Idai-hit communities.

Yao Wei Tech is a solar energy and alternative power supply company dedicated to setting up all purpose clean economic electricity supply. It has been operating for about 10 years in the country led by Hangjian Cheng.

Speaking at the recent handover ceremony of solar lamps in Harare, director of the Social Welfare Department Retired Major Thuso Maphala said government welcomed the noble gesture from the Chinese firm.

“The disaster in Chimanimani took lives, homes, cut down power lines and swept away property leaving only darkness in its wake,” Maphala said.

“As a department, we appreciate and acknowledgement the donation made by the company and their intervention in bringing lights to the unfortunate victims of cyclone Idai in this dark time.”

The solar lamps are valued at over RTGS10 000.

Yao Wei Tech sales and marketing Elias Kufa said the solar lamps were user friendly and can be used in any kind of situation.

“The lamps have an attached solar panel which will charge the battery during the day and illuminate at night. They also have a port for an electric charger meaning they will be useful in bad weather and in turn extend their use long after this particular ordeal passes,” said Elias Kufa.

Cheng, who was represented at the ceremony by his personal assistant Brenda Matola said he was hopeful that these lamps would help push recovery searches into the night, allowing for more reach and more range for the rescue and recovery efforts currently underway.

Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing secretary Judith Kateera said government was appreciative of relief efforts done by companies like Yao Wei Tech.

“It is through this united selfless mind-set that we will move forward as a people in re-developing these affected areas in helping revive the community of Chimanimani and other areas affected by Cyclone Idai,” she said.
