Former Warriors captain Method Mwanjale celebrated a low-key 37th birthday yesterday as the country is currently under a coronavirus-enforced lockdown.

Besides, Mwanjale is not that much of a party person and just a beer or two would have sufficed to celebrate his day of birth.

The veteran CAPS United defender, who is recovering from an injury suffered last season, took time to reflect on a football career that has spanned for close to two decades.

“I just turned 37 today and I must say I am content with what God has given me in my life and career. Career-wise, I feel I could have done better and achieved a lot more, but I don’t want to sound ungrateful,” Mwanjale said in a telephone interview with this publication.

A career that began at Hwange FC in 2000 has seen the versatile player captain South African top-flight side Mamelodi Sundowns as well as play for Mpumalanga Black Aces, Tanzanian side Simba Sport Club, CAPS United and Shabanie Mine.

Mwanjale also captained Zimbabwe to a remarkable Cosafa Cup win on home soil back in 2009.

Last year, Mwanjale was impressive at the heart of the CAPS United defence as the club took the league race to the final day, losing out to defending champions FC Platinum.

Perhaps the loss of Mwanjale to an ankle injury in a 3-1 win over Hwange at the National Sports Stadium may have cost the then log leaders the league title. But what’s next for the veteran defender?

“I still have a contract with CAPS United until June this year and God willing, I would like to come back and play again. I feel I have a few more years left in me based on my performance last season,” Mwanjale said.

“My ankle is fine now and I just need to have the pins removed so that I can make a full recovery. Otherwise I can’t wait to get back to full fitness,” he said.

It remains to be seen whether CAPS United, who made a long list of new signings during the last transfer window, will give Mwanjale another chance to play.

Reports suggested that CAPS United coach Darlington Dodo wants to rope in Mwanjale into his technical team.

But it’s been a good two decades of professional football for Mwanjale, a career worth a big bash.

“I am not much of a party person. I prefer my birthdays a bit quiet and a beer or two would make my day,” he said with a chuckle.
