Greek philosopher Plato says: “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.”

Is it that Mutare-based gospel musician Dorcas Moyo (pictured) is aware of Plato’s sentiments when making her music?

So good is her music that many enjoy it and few know her face.

From the Christian community social media groups, long distance buses, pirate taxis to the music pirates at veranda shops among other spots, her songs are being played. Perhaps it’s her moment to claim the top glory within the gospel music industry.

The 40-year-old is indeed a true testimony of the faceless heroine, one who heals and comforts but is never recognised on the streets. All that listeners know is the soul, the wings and imagination they experience in her deep Christian lyrics.

“As of now, if I walk around towns, even on public transport, my music is everywhere. In other programmes like Kwaziso (Radio Zimbabwe programme), listeners do request my songs. My songs are also dominating local radio stations gospel music charts. It feels good,” said Moyo.

Standard Style tracked the singer behind the latest churning voice to the capital of Manicaland province where she revealed the mysteries behind her success as well as details of her personal life.

Moyo is the musician behind popular gospel tracks Haakotsire, Zvininipise, Vakabuda, Tsamba and Kundirwira with her current exploits being denoted by the number of views her songs are getting on online music platforms like YouTube.

“I am who I am because of my listeners and fans. These are people who give me the power to go on. I believe I am still growing and the best is yet to come,” she said.

Moyo, who is also a dietician, had her work appreciated after she was included in a star-studded line-up for the highly publicised National Prayer concert held in June last year at Pockets Hills.

She rubbed shoulders with great gospel musicians like Blessing Shumba, Michael Mahendere, The Charambas and Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave, among others.

Recently, Moyo attracted the attention of award-winning musicians like Mathias Mhere, Togarepi Chivaviro, Bethany Pasinewako and Blessing Shumba who she did some collaborations with.

Her music career had a humble beginning.

She released her first album Ndokusheedzai Jesu in 2006 before going on a sabbatical. Her second album Ndinokutumgamirira came in 2010 before going again into hibernation.

It is her third album Zvininipise, which was released in 2018 that catapulted her to greater heights before adding another scintillating album Ndibatsirei Mwari in 2019. Last year, the soft-spoken musician released the album PaMarah Tapfuura, whose tracks are doing well on local charts.

“I have five albums and nine singles since 2006. My prayer is for me to get more airplay. I have learnt that I have to improve with each album,” added Moyo.

This is the tale of the fast-rising gospel music diva Moyo who for now has become a darling to many gospel music lovers. She is the latest fine musician from Mutare after Shumba and Agatha Murudzwa among others.
