Zim to co-host Africa youth summit

BY WINSTONE ANTONIO

ZIMBABWE has been selected as one of the African countries to host the continent’s three-day youth summit, Breaking Down Borders Africa (BDBA), from May 25 to 28.

The summit will be held outside South Africa for the first time since its inception in 2017.

It brings together youth leaders from across the African continent and the diaspora and will run simultaneously in several countries.

Its illustrious alumni include Jibilika Arts Trust founder and arts promoter Plot Mhako and former Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara.

Botswana will be the main host for the physical summit while Zimbabwe is one of the four countries alongside Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa that will co-host satellite events for this gathering of young leaders.

The summit, which aims to hold robust conversations and build collaborative networks of African youth in social and commercial entrepreneurship and leadership, will be hosted under the theme: Young People in Africa: Collective Participation and Power Beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic. Mhako, who is Zimbabwe’s host committee member, said: “The importance of Zimbabwe’s participation is being able to showcase the country’s youth collective social and economic agenda for Africa.”

BDBA co-founder Nthabiseng Modjadji said the summit was a collaborative and inclusive platform for African youth by African youth.

“Our mission has and will always be to host a platform where African youth set the agenda for deliberation on the renewal and sustainable development on the continent,” said Modjadji.

“As the BDBA youth summit celebrates its fifth anniversary, we found it important to further position the summit as an accessible platform that young people from different regions of the continent can take ownership.”

Previous speakers at the summit included Mhako, Nigerian entrepreneur Adebola Williams, Kenyan political activist and photo-journalist Boniface Mwangi and South African youth activist and author Zulaikha Patel.
