Govt challenges youths to participate in tourism

Latiso Dlamini

ZIMBABWEAN youths have been challenged to participate in the country’s recovery and innovation of its tourism industry by creating modern marketing material and products.

Similarly, players and agents tasked with promotion and marketing of the country's tourism industry have been implored to involve the youths at all levels.

The challenge was made by Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution secretary Latiso Dlamini Maseko at the provincial youth capacitation and tourism innovation challenge awards ceremony in Beitbridge.

“I notice there are few of you here and this does not reflect as a provincial function. We should have more youths participating in this event so that we grow our provincial tourism economy,” Dlamini said.

“We have been tasked to take our economy forward and the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) is there to encourage, stimulate and promote entrepreneurship among the youth. The government is committed to the participation of the youth in the economy through innovation.”

The event on Thursday grouped youths from the province who took part in a Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) competition whose winners will compete at national level.

Simphiwe Mguni of Plumtree won the top prize of US$1 000 for her project on exploring the Zimbabwean culture and heritage through elevation of technology to modern and world-class standards.

She used the mobile phone application Tik Tok to market the country within a short space of time.

The first and second runners up were Leslie Boora from Beitbridge and Team Pinkie of Joshua Nkomo Polytechnic in Gwanda, respectively.

The event was wholly sponsored by ZTA.
