Nine people died on the spot when an eight-tonne truck and Toyota Wish were involved in a head–on collision at the 85km peg on the Masvingo-Bulawayo Road on Thursday.

ELEVEN people died in two separate road accidents which happened between Thursday and yesterday morning along Bulawayo-Masvingo and Harare-Mutare highways, respectively.

Nine people died on the spot when an eight-tonne truck and Toyota Wish were involved in a head–on collision at the 85km peg on the Masvingo-Bulawayo Road on Thursday.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the deaths.

“I can confirm the death of nine people after an accident along the Masvingo Road. We will be giving more details on our Twitter handle soon,’’ Nyathi said.

Two other people died while one was seriously injured in another head-on collision involving a Toyota Wish and a lorry in Marondera yesterday.

The fire brigade had to be called in to remove the trapped bodies.  The Toyota Wish vehicle was reduced to wreckage.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachi confirmed the accident and urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.

“I confirm that two people died in a road accident that occurred along Harare-Mutare Highway in Marondera. We urge motorists to exercise caution and observe road rules and regulations to avoid loss of lives. We will release the names of deceased after their next of kin are advised,” he said.

It is reported that the Toyota Wish driver was driving towards Harare with two passengers on board.

The driver tried to overtake numerous vehicles, resulting in a head-on collision with a CMED lorry that was going in the opposite direction.

The lorry was carrying 13 CMED workers.

The driver of the Toyota Wish sustained multiple injuries and is in a critical condition.
