TOURISTS are no longer required to produce COVID-19 vaccination certificates at ports of entry or at tourist resorts after the pandemic was declassified as a public health emergency.

Most countries dealt away with COVID-19 regulations last year, but in Zimbabwe, a basket of measures aimed at containing the virus remained in place.

Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa told journalists during  a post-Cabinet briefing that: “Cabinet has directed as follows; that the mandatory wearing of face masks be lifted as the country adopts the strategy on the long-term management of the COVID-19 pandemic; that all border measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 be lifted with immediate effect; and that tourists should no longer be required to produce COVID-19 vaccination certificates at ports of entry or at tourist resorts around the country.”

The virus first emerged in Wuhan, China, in 2019 before spreading across the globe, disrupting livelihoods and claiming lives of millions across the globe.

As of May 3, 2023, Zimbabwe had recorded a total of 264 685 confirmed cases and 5 686 deaths.

According to available statistics, as of 30 April 2023, a total of 13,935,112 vaccine doses had been administered in the country.
