A 15-year-old learner at one of Harare’s elite private schools allegedly collapsed after she was asked by authorities to go back home due to school fees arrears.
This was revealed by the minor’s mother during court proceedings before Harare magistrate Meenal Narotam, where she was seeking US$400 for maintenance of her five minor children from her estranged husband.
The mother told the court that her first born was in Form 3 and did not take well being sent home for owing school fees at the prestigious school.
She said she was called to the school and heard that her daughter had cried uncontrollably and collapsed.
The woman accused her ex-husband, who is a mechanical engineer, for neglecting the children’s needs.
However, the father told the court that he had made a payment plan with the school.
He said he could only pay US$200 because he had many responsibilities including paying rent, catering for his other minor child with his new wife and debts to their former housemaid.
The ex-husband also told the court he earned US$740 and asked his ex-wife to help in the maintenance of the children since she also worked as a hairdresser.
