Briefs: Bulawayo residents challenge King Mambo

Self-styled Mambo King, Mike Moyo, petitioned the council last week seeking the renaming of streets and suburbs.

Bulawayo residents and the Khumalo clan have opposed a push to rename some streets and suburbs after the late King Mambo and other people under his kingdom.

Self-styled Mambo King, Mike Moyo, petitioned the council last week seeking the renaming of streets and suburbs. Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association secretary for administration, Thembelani Dube, said the naming of streets and suburbs in Bulawayo is not centred on one tribe.

“The unfortunate part of such utterances is the failure by the Lozwi King to observe that most streets bear names of the people who are from diverse tribes,” Dube said. “The current setup reflects the cosmopolitan nature of tribes found in the region hence you have Chiefs Bango, Tategulu, Khumalo.”

Ndebele King Bulelani Lobengula Khumalo spokesperson, Bornman Khumalo, also shot down the idea.

"We condemn any efforts to divide the Mzilikazi people who are diverse and living harmoniously together,” he said.

“He must engage the elders but unfortunately he seems to be a project of some people whom we haven't yet identified."
