President Emmerson Mnangagwa is committed to respecting the two presidential term limits despite the push by some sections of Zanu PF for him to remain in power until 2030, his lawyers have said.
The lawyers Dube, Manikai & Hwacha were responding to the lead story in The Standard story headlined: ED scheme hit by scandal, which was based on a High Court case.
It was about a Harare man who took the municipality to the High Court after it allocated his stand for a presidential borehole scheme run by Mnangagwa’s special advisor Paul Tunguwarara without his knowledge.
The applicant, Chenjerai Milton Musonza, cited the City of Harare and the director of housing and community services as respondents.
He said a community solar project covering his whole stand was erected and a borehole was drilled there, all without his knowledge.
War veterans led by Blessed Geza on several occasions accused Tungwarara of using the presidential schemes to push the campaign, but the lawyers said the statements “input subverting or by-passing the constitution, abuse of office and groups of people, including war veterans and their families.”
“Our client has consistently affirmed, publicly and internationally his commitment to constitutionalism indluding the two term limit under Zimbabwean laws,” the lawyers wrote to The Standard.
“Your portrayal seeks to justly undermine this commitment and create public doubt regarding his constitutional adherence.”
