Armed robbery suspect denied bail

A 31-year-old robbery suspect is languishing in remand prison after  prosecutors opposed bail saying they feared that he might abscond trial because he was facing a lengthy jail sentence.

The suspect, Tafadzwa Mbombo, was remanded in custody to September 29 pending further investigations.

He appeared before Harare magistrate Tapiwa Kuhudzai.

In opposing bail, prosecutor Lawrence Gangarawe said Mbombo was facing a serious offence which is likely to attract a custodial sentence upon conviction.

Gangarawe said the suspect might also interfere with witnesses or even abscond.

The court heard that on September 5, Mbombo pounced on the complaint, John Brian Tuzora, and hit him with an unknown object on the right eye.

Mbombo, who was in the company of his accomplice, later stole his Huawei P40 mobile phone and wallet and fled.

The complaint’s eye was permanently damaged.

On the same day, they attacked John Chikwaka near Hatcliff dam.

They used the same modus operandi, striking Chikwaka with an unknown object twice on the head and on the jaw and snatched away his wallet containing US$30.

Mbombo's accomplices are on the run.
