
A Harare man appeared before a Harare magistrate facing charges of extortion and impersonating the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) after he allegedly threatened a man, who owed his wife money, after summoning him to a police station.
The suspect, Yaphet Manjere (43), was remanded in custody October 10 for routine appearance.
Prosecutors said on May 22, 2025 in Harare, Munyoro and his wife, Janet Munyoro contacted the complainant requesting to meet at the Harare central police station.
The complainant complied. Upon meeting the couple, Manjere introduced himself as a member of the CIO.
He allegedly threatened the complainant with harm if he failed to pay an undisclosed amount of money he owed his wife. The accused person insisted that the money should be paid immediately but the complainant said he was broke.
However, the accused and Munyoro became aggressive and issued further threats of serious harm if the complainant failed to not comply.
The complainant reported the matter to the police leading to their arrest.
