A senior Zanu PF official in Harare has appeared in court facing allegations of duping a desperate land seeker of US$5600 after selling a non-existent plot.
Rufaro Mupepete, who chairs an association for dependants of national heroes, appeared before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa facing fraud charges and was released on US$100 bail.
The complainant is Easter Mzite from Glen View.
Prosecutors alleged that sometime in January 2024, Mzite approached Mupepete looking for a plot to buy in areas around Marondera.
Mupepete confirmed that she was also selling 100 hectares of land at plot number 3 Broomiey, Marondera at a total cost of US$6000. On October 15 last year, Mzite paid US$5600 towards the purchase of the stand.
Mupepete promised the complainant that the land in question will be ready for occupation before the end of the month.
The court heard that later Mupepete became evasive, breaching the initial agreement while promising the complainant to refund her money back in monthly installments.
Mzite reported the matter to the police, leading to her arrest.
