A village head is in remand prison after he was arrested for allegedly being the ringleader in the theft of cattle in Mushumbi pools.
Forty-five-year-old Isaac Svinugwa was arrested together with three other suspects.
Svinugwa was sold out by one suspect, Lyod Marovha, who told the police that the village head was the mastermind behind stock theft cases.
Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Lucy Chigwenhese confirmed the case.
"I can confirm the arrest of Svinugwa, Marovha, Knowledge Nhete and Herbert Gatsi in connection with a series of stock theft cases in Mushumbi Pools," Chigwenhese said.
Police said sometime in November, the quartet stole and slaughtered cattle belonging to Michael Chininga (45) and Luckson Nyamarombo (92) and sold the meat to butcheries.
Police urged farmers to brand all cattle for easy identification and ownership verification and to pen their livestock at night to reduce the risk of theft.
Chigwenhese urged villagers to report any cases of stock theft early to enable swift police action and increase chances of recovery and to adopt modern technologies such as geo-fencing, which alerts owners in real time when animals move beyond designated boundaries.
